Your Primogems trickle in slow, so every wish has to count. Here is exactly where a free-to-play player should spend first, and where spending is money down the drain.

Do the Beginner’s Wish Banner Before Anything Else
The single best early decision you can make is finishing the Beginner’s Wish banner. It gives you a flat discount your first ten-pull costs 8 Acquaint Fates instead of 10, effectively 20% off and it runs on Acquaint Fates, the weakest wishing currency you own. You can wish exactly 20 times before it disappears forever, so there is no downside to clearing it out early.
That banner also guarantees Noelle by your twentieth wish, and your tenth wish guarantees a 4-star or better. Noelle is not filler. She throws up a shield, heals your whole party off her Elemental Burst, and with a claymore she can genuinely carry as a Geo main DPS well past the early game. For a fresh account with a thin roster, a free sustain unit who never leaves the standard pool is pure value.
Practically speaking, do all 20 pulls do not stop at eight to “save.” The discount exists nowhere else in the game, and the Acquaint Fates you spend here are worth almost nothing on any banner that matters. Finishing clears the banner and converts idle currency into actual characters and Starglitter.
Then Bank Everything Pity and the 50/50 Should Drive Your Spending
After the beginner banner, the temptation is to fire off a single wish every time you scrape together 160 Primogems. Resist it. Character Event banners run on a pity counter: soft pity starts kicking in around wish 74, and hard pity guarantees a 5-star at wish 90. Every wish you make builds that counter, and crucially it carries over between event banners.
On top of pity sits the 50/50. When you finally hit a 5-star, there is a 50% chance it is the featured character; lose that coin flip and your very next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured one. Worst case to land a specific character is around 180 wishes, and the realistic average is far lower. Dribbling out single pulls does not technically waste pity, but it means you almost never get to choose you just pull whoever happens to be up when you have Fates.
The disciplined play is to pick a character you actually want, then bank toward a real attempt ideally close to 90 wishes’ worth, or 14,400 Primogems, so a guarantee is within reach. Because a 4-star drops at least every ten wishes, a big pull session also floods you with usable support units and more Starglitter to recycle.
Keep your Primogems as Primogems until you are ready to pull; converting early locks them and buys you nothing. Watch the banner schedule on HoYoLAB so you are never caught with an empty wallet the week your unit finally reruns.
Where Your Primogems Actually Come From (Including Free Fates People Miss)
Daily Commissions are your reliable floor. Four small tasks plus reporting to Katheryne pay 60 Primogems a day, roughly 1,800 a month, or about eleven wishes for ten minutes of play. There is no faster consistent source, so never skip a day.
Exploration is the early jackpot. Every region is stuffed with chests, hidden puzzles, and Statues of the Seven that pay out Primogems feed the statues the Anemoculus and Geoculus you collect, and each level returns Primogems and Adventure EXP. First-time domain clears and boss kills logged in the Adventurer Handbook each hand over a chunk of Primogems too, so hunt down the ones you have not touched.
Events are the biggest bucket by a wide margin. A single event cycle can pay 400 to over 1,000 Primogems, and web events plus HoYoLAB check-ins pile on more. Logging in during every event is how free-to-play accounts build a real war chest, so treat the event calendar as required reading.
The free Fates almost everyone forgets live in Paimon’s Bargains. Each month you can buy five Intertwined Fates with Masterless Starglitter earned from every 4- and 5-star pull and every dupe, plus more Fates with Masterless Stardust from your 3-star weapon pulls. That is several near-free wishes a month; buy them every single reset without fail.
Skip the Standard Banner Trap Where NOT to Spend
The Standard banner, Wanderlust Invocation, looks safe because it is permanent, and that is exactly why new players quietly bleed resources into it. It runs on Acquaint Fates, which accumulate on their own from exploration and the monthly shop, so there is no reason to pour Primogems or Intertwined Fates into it chasing a jackpot.
Your first 5-star from the standard banner is guaranteed to be a character rather than a weapon, which is a nice one-time bonus but that is an argument for letting Acquaint Fates build naturally, not for rushing. When Paimon’s Bargains makes you choose between the monthly Intertwined and Acquaint Fates, prioritize Intertwined if you want limited characters, since Acquaint Fates arrive cheaply enough elsewhere.
Skip the Weapon banner entirely while you are new. Early weapons matter far less than a well-built character, and the weapon banner’s Epitomized Path pity is punishing and expensive. Craftable billets and free 4-star weapons will carry any team comfortably through the entire early and mid game.
And do not convert a mountain of Primogems to Fates “to be ready” only to splurge on whatever banner is live out of boredom. Idle Primogems lose absolutely nothing, but an impulse ten-pull on a unit you did not want is gone for good.
Legit Ways to Speed Up and the “Free Primogem” Scams to Run From
If you ever decide to spend a little, the honestly best value is the Blessing of the Welkin Moon. But purely free-to-play, your real accelerant is consistency dailies, events, and thorough exploration compound faster than most players expect once you keep them up for a few weeks.
Want to fund the odd purchase without touching your own cash? Legit reward apps like Google Opinion Rewards pay small Google Play credit for short surveys, and Mistplay rewards you for playing games. Be realistic: these earn you cents to a few dollars over weeks, not a windfall treat any credit as the occasional Welkin, never an income stream. The upside is that it is real, allowed, and completely safe for your account.
What is not safe: “free Primogem generators,” gem hacks, and modded APKs. Primogems live on HoYoverse’s servers, not on your phone, so no website or app can conjure them full stop. Every generator you find is either a survey maze that pays you nothing or a phishing page fishing for your login details.
The damage is concrete. Hand over your HoYoverse credentials and you can lose the account outright; sideload a modded APK and you are inviting malware straight onto your device. HoYoverse actively bans accounts caught using third-party tools, which wipes every Primogem you legitimately earned. Never enter your login anywhere but the official app or website the only Primogems worth having are the ones you actually earned.
