You don’t need a single limited five-star to clear the Spiral Abyss. A sharp free-to-play roster, built around reactions instead of rarity, will carry you further than most wallets.
Your Free Roster Is Better Than You Think
The characters that win Genshin’s hardest content are mostly four-stars, and several land in your inventory for free. Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa arrive during the opening hours. The Traveler is permanently free and swaps between Anemo, Geo, Electro, and Dendro as you unlock each element, which quietly makes them one of the most flexible units you own.
Xiangling — arguably the best free damage dealer in the game — is a guaranteed reward for clearing Spiral Abyss Floor 3, Chamber 3. The rest fill in through the standard banner and the shops. Every wish on the permanent Wanderlust Invocation banner has a shot at Bennett, Xingqiu, Fischl, and Sucrose — the exact four-stars that anchor top-tier teams. Duplicate pulls become Masterless Starglitter, which you spend in Paimon’s Bargains to buy specific characters and their constellations outright.
Treat every standard-banner four-star as a keeper, not a consolation prize. A C6 Fischl or C4 Xingqiu, both achievable through patient Starglitter shopping, outperforms a poorly built limited five-star in real combat.
Build Around Reactions, Not Rarity
Genshin’s damage ceiling comes from elemental reactions, and reactions don’t care how rare your characters are. A well-timed Vaporize or Aggravate multiplies numbers far more than a higher base stat ever will. This is exactly why free-to-play teams stay competitive at every patch, even against whale rosters.
The classic engine is the National core: Bennett, Xiangling, and Xingqiu. Xingqiu rains Hydro from off-field, Xiangling’s Pyronado slams into it for constant Vaporize, and Bennett’s burst heals the team while pumping everyone’s Attack. Add a fourth flex — Chongyun, Sucrose, or a free Anemo Traveler — and you have a team that clears endgame content almost on autopilot.
Dendro changed everything for free players. The Dendro Traveler costs nothing and unlocks Aggravate, Spread, Bloom, and Hyperbloom. Pair Fischl’s Oz with Dendro for one of the highest sustained-damage setups in the game, no five-star anywhere in sight.

Three Teams You Can Copy Today
Pyro Vaporize, the National-lite build: Bennett, Xiangling, Xingqiu, and Chongyun or Sucrose. Front-load Bennett and Xingqiu’s bursts, drop Xiangling’s Pyronado, then swap to your on-field driver and hold normal attacks. This single team can clear most Abyss chambers by itself with room to spare.
Aggravate: Fischl, Dendro Traveler, Bennett or Kuki Shinobu, and Sucrose. Fischl’s Oz provides constant Electro, the Dendro Traveler’s burst seeds the field with Dendro, and Sucrose groups enemies while shredding resistance. Every hit that lands on a Dendro-affected enemy triggers an amplified Electro reaction. It’s absurdly consistent for a lineup that costs nothing.
Hyperbloom: Dendro Traveler, Xingqiu, Kuki Shinobu, and a flex like Fischl. Hydro plus Dendro creates Bloom cores, and Kuki’s Electro detonates them into homing Hyperbloom projectiles while she heals through the whole rotation. Against crowds, this comp deletes health bars while asking almost nothing of your artifact quality.
Notice the overlap — Bennett, Xingqiu, Fischl, and the Traveler appear again and again. Pour your resin into three or four free characters and you suddenly cover half the roster’s needs across multiple teams.
Weapons and Artifacts Without the Gacha
You can forge competitive weapons at the blacksmith. Prototype Archaic, Prototype Starglitter, Prototype Amber, and Prototype Crescent cover the claymore, polearm, catalyst, and bow slots. For reaction drivers, Iron Sting (sword) and Mappa Mare (catalyst) hand out Elemental Mastery cheaply — perfect for Aggravate and Bloom teams.
Two free polearms deserve special mention. The Catch, fished up in Inazuma and refinable to R5 with materials, is genuinely best-in-slot for Xiangling. Favonius and Sacrificial weapons, if the standard banner hands them to you, solve the energy problems that plague so many F2P rotations.
Artifacts come entirely from resin-farmed domains, so they cost only time. Emblem of Severed Fate boosts burst damage and recharge for Xiangling and Xingqiu. Deepwood Memories shreds Dendro resistance for every reaction team. Early on, the Instructor’s set grants a flat +120 Elemental Mastery to the party and is embarrassingly effective for the effort it takes to farm.
Prioritize Energy Recharge until your bursts come up every rotation, then chase Crit and Elemental Mastery. A free character with clean substats and reliable energy beats a five-star that can’t fire its ultimate — fundamentals win the fight.
Stacking Wishes the Honest Way
Primogems accumulate faster than most players expect if you never skip the basics. Four daily commissions plus Katheryne’s bonus give 60 primogems every day. HoYoLAB’s daily check-in, version-livestream redemption codes (usually around 300 primogems each), and the free Battle Pass track all pile up quietly in the background.
The Spiral Abyss is the biggest recurring source — up to 600 primogems per half, refreshing on the 1st and 16th of each month. Add event rewards, which routinely hand out several hundred primogems per patch, plus thorough map exploration, and a patient account clears the roughly 16,000 primogems for a soft-pity five-star every couple of versions.
If you want to spend a little without breaking the bank, do it legitimately.
