Small Recurring Charges Are Quietly Draining Your Account

The subscriptions that hurt the most are the ones you forgot you had. Individually they look trivial — a few dollars here, a streaming plan there — but stacked together they can quietly equal a meaningful part of your monthly spending.

Once a year, pull up your card and bank statements and highlight every recurring charge. Seeing them all in one place is often a small shock, and that shock is useful. For each one, ask a simple question: if this were not already active, would I sign up for it today?

Cancel anything that fails that test. For the services you keep, check whether an annual plan is cheaper than paying monthly, and whether you are on a tier more generous than you actually use.

Set a recurring reminder to repeat this review. New subscriptions appear constantly, and free trials have a way of turning into paid ones the moment you stop paying attention.
